My life so far

I studied French and Portuguese at Georgetown University, and then got an M.A. in Creative Writing at New York University. But since I didn’t want to be an academic, I took a low-on-the-totem-pole job with BusinessWeek. I have been a full-time and freelance business writer and editor ever since. We lived in England for four years (my husband was teaching at Oxford), during which time I wrote a first draft of a novel. We moved to Philadelphia in late 2005, and that’s how I met Amanda – she’s my neighbor. I have two boys (three, if you count my husband), a dog and a fish. Some would call that a menagerie – I call it a full life. Recently, I’ve gotten back into poetry and started a weekly writer’s group with a handful of smart, interesting, very cool women. I was born in Texas, but I’m also half Cuban, so I figure that balances things out.

Things I like and don’t like

I like: mystery novels, red wine (especially Pinot Noir), anything French (especially Paris), the poetry of Sharon Olds, John Donne and Carolyn Forché, anything cooked with garlic, swimming, traveling, playing Scrabble with my kids and, most of all, writing. I really dislike: liver, turnips, narrow-mindedness, bling vehicles like Hummers, religious extremism, cockroaches, snakes, bullies (young and old) and going to the dentist.
