Soapbox's Joomla Handbook is now a website: JoomlaSimple.com

Every client has experienced some version of our Word-wonky, long, packed-with-heavy-graphics Joomla manual. We're relieved to say that it's now available online at www.joomlasimple.com. If you're one of our clients, check back often, as it's evolving daily.

Tag Cloud Zen Garden
I adore tag clouds. They’re attractive, informative — a perfect melding of form and  function.  More clicks equals a bigger tag. Bigger tag equals hope ... answers ... wonder. Such a simple feature, but the brilliant mind who came up with it just  TRANSFORMED the mundane list into something genuinely organic and revealing.  They’re like…. the Zen garden for the web master’s soul.  You plant the tags, the user click click clicks away (or you add, add, add content) and the tags just grow. (Users equal sunshine in this scenario.)Tags for me tell me more about a site than a short description will. The intro to the site may be: "Buy our stuff, we're awesome." But their tag cloud might tell me that their product blows because everyone clicks on "Error." Sigh...it's kind of like wearing your heart on your sleeve, except with style... Anyway, back to the Zen metaphor...They shouldn’t be called “clouds,” they should be “gardens”—little happy gardens of meaning for a site. AH! it's too much. Stopping now! Start your own garden! Tags - a folksonomy component for joomla. (I've never tried it, but let me know how it goes... :D)

Soapbox launches GlamourGals.org

When I learned about Glamour Gals, and its dynamic young leader Rachel Doyle, I couldn't turn the project away. A young social entrepreur, Rachel started "GG" when she was just 17. It didn't take long for Oprah, CosmoGirl and CBS Early Morning show to take note. Now, 5 years later, GG has more than 50 high school chapters around the country.

The GlamourGals model consists of local chapters, each recruiting teen volunteers who make regularly scheduled visits to nursing homes and senior centers to give complimentary facials and makeovers.

We wanted to make the website fun, youthful and candid. It also needed to support all of GG's fundraising and communications needs. We used  CiviCRM -- an extensive open source non-profit suite of tools.

Check it out! www.glamourgals.org.

Joomla WYSIWYG JCE Editor now offers lightbox photo gallery

It's called the JCE Simple Images Gallery Plugin. Most Joomlers will tell you, the JCE WYSIWYG editor is far superior  to all other Joomla WYSIWYGs. It's what makes Joomla the content management system so easy to use. It seems that every month, Joomla must-haves (video management, advanced link management,and the list goes on) launch as "buttons" within the JCE text editor -- making maintenance for my non-technical clients as easy as composing an email.

Here goes a test (meet my son Dylan):

{ gallery}samplegallery{/gallery }

Doh! Yell Strike one.

[I added spaces after the { } so that the code doesn't actually render so that you see my initial results]

The developer didn't mention on his site (well, his site is in german so maybe he did mention) that I ALSO have to install the "Simple Image Gallery" Mambot. That was 1hours worth of banging my head against my desk. So be it. So, in sum, the JCE plugin is simply the button for JCE. You still need to go get the Mambot as well.

Click the first image to experience the magic.

As Borat says ... "Success!"
